The Relationship of Oral Health Literacy and Self-Efficacy With Oral Health Status and Dental Neglect examines the associations among oral health literacy, oral health status, and dental neglect, to see if self-efficacy mediated or modified these associations.  Using self-reported data from the Carolina Oral Health Literacy Project, the authors found that increased oral health literacy was associated with better oral health status but not with dental neglect. Self-efficacy was a strong correlate of dental neglect and may mediate the effects of literacy on oral health status.

Kaiser Health Institute News Service reports on hearings in theKansas State  Legislature, which is considering expanding dental care for adults enrolled in Medicaid.  “Currently the program only provides routine dental services for children and emergency services for adults. Those emergency services include extractions in the event of acute or chronic infection or in cases of injury so severe the teeth can’t be salvaged.”  Kansas used to have broader dental care coverage, but that was curtailed with the economic downturn.

The Joint Legislative Budget Committee heard from Karlene Ketola, executive director of the Michigan Oral Health Coalition, who testified that despite the dire financial situation in Michigan, the state had decided that providing these benefits made fiscal sense.
